For installing on a web server the instructions require switch.txt to be changed to index.php but the latest installation has no switch.txt or the alternative suggested demo.txt. Also don't seem to be real instructions for Linux servers where can't change the php.ini settings.

Any help so can install and try new version appreciated.

Those instructions are out of date.

Complete the install
Test the basics via the default guest access
Edit auth_config.php comment out guest and uncomment static
Edit \library\Xerte\Authentication\Static.php and add your own usernames and passwords

Ofc, you can choose to uncheck ldap if you have an ldap server for authentication.
I installed XOT2 on a Zentyal 2.2 (Ubuntu Lucid x86) and a Zentyal 3.0 (Ubuntu Precise x64) server and this was quite straightforward.

sidenote for Zentyal users: You can find the LDAP data you need in the users/groups section of the webgui of Zentyal. Be aware that for Zentyal 3.0 a different port is used: 390, since there are 2 instances od OpenLDAP are running. One is used by Samba4 and another for Zentyal LDAP users. Both instances are transparently synced.

1 more thing to think off: BEFORE you go to step 3, you must make the txt file that is used to configure the database settings as writable, otherwise you will get an errormessage that no database is selected.
Maybe the install script should check of the txt file is writable before proceding?
