Hi,
We are about to upgrade our current Xerte version to the latest and I've been asked to change the server from a linux OS to Windows server at the same time. Has anyone done this before? Is there anything else that needs to be considered that differs from a standard upgrade?
Many thanks.

Are you looking to switch to IIS too or install Apache on the Windows server?
I look after Xerte installations with both combinations and once configured correctly both combinations work fine but would say that Apache is the easier to maintain given the PHP/MySQL requirement too. I'm not aware of anyone running Xerte on MSSQL rather than MySQL.

Hi Ron,

We are just investigating all options at the moment before we start anything. What are the main differences in configuration that we need to consider between IIS and Apache? We would be sticking with a MySQL database.

Many thanks,

Ross

Hi Ross
sorry I don't have time to go into detail here but what I would say is this is a bit like Moodle options e.g. Xerte will work fine on Windows and IIS but most of our development is via LAMP/XAMPP/WAMP etc so there might be less awareness/support/documentation/testing with any issues that you might encounter if you go with IIS. As a simple example those setting up a new installation or trying Xerte via xampp will often stumble across the PHP default upload limits. I know through experience that with Xerte via IIS then yes the PHP configuration is relevant but so is the IIS configuration which won't allow uploads larger than it's setting regardless of the PHP setting. That's a simple example but I guess depends on how well you know whatever combination you choose and how much internal and external support you might need.
