Having installed Xerte, the "success page" reports: To go to your installation visit:

xerte.ed.ac.uk/setup/. (This is the first sign I had of the installation error.

In fact the home page is: xerte.ed.ac.uk/ )

The whole service does not work. It expects to find all other pages as a subdirectory of setup/ . For example when I click on the [Edit] icon, I get an error message saying:

The requested URL /setup/edithtml.php was not found on this server.

In fact the PHP file edithtml.php is in the top-level folder, not in the setup/ subfolder.

Can any of you tell me how to confugre Xerte's HOME ULR, or how to configure various path locations. Adjusting the Paths shown in management page (in my case at:

xerte.ed.ac.uk/management.php

do not help in this case. The path settings in there, do not allow me to set the HOME path.

Any advice welcome. I have re-installed Xerte using as vanilla options as possible (e.g. "guest" user...), and I have ensured (as described in a useful installation help guide) to set the list of subfolders permissions as "777".

Something strange there. I would expect if set up completes it would just list your install url as xerte.ed.ac.uk
Do you have access to the database?
In the sitedetails table check/change the following:
site_url
root_file_path
import_path

BTW each of those values would normally end with a forward slash e.g. site url should be
http://xerte.ed.ac.uk/
or better still
https://xerte.ed.ac.uk/

Thanks Ron, for the thoughts.

I have traced the fault, to the .htaccess file. Somehow during installation, lots of rewrite rules were created. Here's a sample:

rewriteRule ^edit_([A-Za-z0-9]+)?(.*)$ /setup/edit.php?template_id=$1&$2

I fixed it by editing those, and the whole xerte service came to life. So this is now solved for me. I can watch out for this whenever I do a re-install, but it bothers me (just a little) that these rewrite rules were created wrongly somehow along the way.
