Hi everyone,

I have a tutor who is getting his students to create Xerte projects as part of their assessment. There will be between 20-30 projects to mark. Students will submit their zipped Xerte projects to Blackboard.

Options for the tutor when marking
1.Extract Xerte projects to Blackboard module (more steps with this option as separate folders will need to be created in the blackboard file manager). Create a hidden content area to view each Xerte project.
2. Use a Xerte Sandpit account to import student's Xerte projects so the tutor can easily view projects.

Questions:
Q. Is there a better way of going about marking Xerte projects? (I don't know that sharing would be enough in this scenario as there would be nothing to stop students continuing to work on their project past the due date.)

Q.Is there a space limit for Xerte Techdis accounts?

Q. How do other institutions manage student created Xerte projects?

thanks in advance,

Alison
P.S. I'm signed up for the Xerte Friday, so perhaps this will come up during the session.

Hi Alison
good to hear of another project involving students authoring with Xerte.

I'd suggest the following:
1. Establish a Xerte Online Toolkits installation (if you don't already have one) to which the tutor and students have authoring access.
The there are two options:
a) The students finish their projects name them with their name in the title and then use the properties panel to give a copy to the tutor. This means the tutor gets a complete copy and the student can no longer edit that copy. The downside of this option is perhaps that the student could continue to edit their own copy and then give that new copy to the tutor leading to multiple copies in the tutors workspace.
b) If the tutor creates a master project which could also include the brief or predefined structure and then duplicates that and names each copy according to each student they can then share editing access with each student and then revoke that editing access and leave it as read only when the assignment deadline is complete. The tutor could also add feedback direct in the LO or a page at the end.

Both options sound a bit complicated but actually could be very quick and achieve what I think you need.

Hi Alison
I realised after posting my previous reply that I didn't answer your itemised questions so here's an additional response...

Q.Is there a space limit for Xerte Techdis accounts?
The Jisc Techdis sandpit is not meant to be used beyond initial exploration and evaluation. You really need your own internally or externally hosted installation if you are going to use XOT for real projects let alone student projects which obviously require multiple author accounts and long term availability.

Q. How do other institutions manage student created Xerte projects?
I'm sure this will be covered during the Xerte Friday session tomorrow.

Thanks Ron for your quick response.

Yes a local installation is the aim, but I need to put together a business case for this.

thank you
