Just duplicated all this in another thread! Oops, but glad I came to the same conclusions.

Ron mentioned that outdated installations can be a problem, which is fair, and the cause of our issues. Could an update check be built into XOT, so every so often it can 'call home' and check for versions newer than itself, then display a message on-screen or email the administrator? It should help us as Xerte is not one of our highest-traffic, business-critical systems and is mostly off the radar when it comes to updates.

Regards.

Hi Paul
that's a good point but there are a few reasons that hasn't been in place although has been discussed and may be part of a future release.

Firstly we've never had a register this installation type button similar to Moodle where admins can register the install along with an email to receive news etc.

There hasn't consistently been a need to register anywhere to download the code so even though you do have to register here on the community site to download the files you don't on github etc.

We do also send out news via the various mailing lists but the relevant people aren't always subscribed.

All that said it is overdue to build in something like this so we'll add it or re-highlight it on the todo list.
