Hi everyone,

Just wanted confirmation that the following instructions on GitHub still stand regarding installing support for JMOL:

"If you want to install support for JMOL:

1. Backup the file \modules\xerte\parent_templates\Nottingham\wizards\en-GB\data.xwd. You will rebuild this file in step 4.

2. Download and unzip JMolViewer.zip from the downloads section at xerte.org.uk and unzip it directly into this folder.

3. Enable support for JMOL: edit \src\Nottingham\wizards\en-GB\jmol.xwd and remove the parameter deprecated="We cannot redistribute GPL components. You must install JMOL manually. See instructions in the JMOL folder" from line 9.

4. Goto /build and run rebuildNottingham.bat (Windows) or rebuildNottingham.sh (Mac / Linux)

5. Users should now be able to add new JMOL page types from the media menu."

We are currently on v3.6 but looking to upgrade to v3.8 in the coming months, will JMOL still work in the newer versions of Xerte?

Many thanks and Merry Christmas
Alison

Hi Alison

We would no longer recommend using the JMol plugin as some security issues were discovered earlier in the year. At the University of Nottingham we have removed the plugin from both Xerte & Moodle - I also don't think the JMolViewer.zip is available to download anymore.

Unfortunately I don't know of any alternative to JMol

Fay

Hi Everyone,
new here, enjoying xerte so far.
Has anyone found an alternative to JMol?
The NGL viewer looks interesting and can be embedded
proteinformatics.charite.de/ngl/doc/#User_manual/Usage/Embedding
Has anyone tried this? Is it secure?
Any help gratefully received

David
