Hi Elly

My colleague, Takeshi Adachi, has come up with a solution to the problems created by leaving the Gap Fill page before completion. It was suggested to him by something that Fay Cross showed at the Xerte Conference in 2017, so you may already be aware of it.

Basically you force completion of the task before users can move to another page. So first he disabled the Navigation controls for that page (see Optional Properties). Then in the Feedback (which only displays on successful completion) he inserted a Xerte page link to the next page in the project, using Styles to display the link so it looks like a button. It's not an elegant solution, but it works!

Hope this is useful,

Jonathan

We are still struggling with this issue with Gap Fill. Here is the behaviour that I have observed:
It is a problem with Interactivity > Gapfill page type where the correctly typed answers are not turning green in some circumstances.
- On first sequential visit to Gapfill page, all works as expected: correctly inputted answers are accepted and turn green. Incorrect answers are not accepted, and must be re-attempted until correct. Feedback shown at the end when all gaps have been filled. Great.
After navigating away, on subsequent visits to the same page during the same session, there are issues:
- previous correctly inputted answers are still shown, but are red rather than green
- new attempts to type correct answer in unfilled gaps are accepted, but stay red and do not turn green.

Unfortunately this is hampering a very useful page type for us. Although we have something of a workaround, we would much prefer not to disable navigation and to let users move back and forth freely in the LO. Hopefully the information above will help with troubleshooting the issue. Thanks.

I have created a short LO that demonstrates the issue with the gap fill - fill in blank page: Gap fill - fill in blank issue demo
(Created on a v3.9 installation)
Hopefully that helps to illustrate the problem. Is there any likelihood that it could be fixed? Thanks.

Hi
thanks for the link to your example that's always useful to make it clear what is being reported or asked about.
We have the gap fill page on our todo list following our recent accessibility audit because using colours alone for feedback is obviously not a good solution. However there are 3 different modes to that page types and ideally we want to make it more consistent with other page types and to add ticks and crosses for the feedback rather than just green and red etc.
In the meantime try the following:
If you have a number of gap fill pages add an optional styles property to the LO icon.
If you only want this to apply to a single gap fill page add an optional styles property just to that page.
Add the following css:
.x_gapFill_page #targetHolder input[readonly], #targetHolder .target.correct, #targetHolder input[correct] {
border: dotted;
color:green !important;
}
You should now see that when an answer is correct it turns green but also has a dotted green border. You could refer to that in the instructions of the first gap fill page.
When you move away and then back to the page you should find that new correct answers still turn green with a dotted border.
Let us know if that works?

BTW you could also then tick the box to show language options for the page and edit the string that probably currently says: Your correct answers are shown in green. Try again with those you have got wrong.
and change it to:
Your correct answers are shown in green with a dotted border. Try again with those you have got wrong.

But keep in mind that at some point we hope to change this so there are ticks to show the correct answers to make it more consistent with other page types and not rely on color either.
