Hi, So I've created some learning objects using Xerte, and now I'm wondering how to distribute them. The objects are quite large (1-2Gb) with a lot of video files. Can anyone suggest where I might host these learning objects. I need a hosting service which will allow a large amount of streaming video. I'm not sure how many users I would have, but it could amount to a lot over time. Cost is an issue. Thanks

Hi
You should be uploading your video to a proper streaming service like YouTube or Vimeo etc and embedding in your Xerte LO’s from there, not uploading lots of video direct to Xerte. Video uploaded direct to Xerte will not be proper streaming and will not provide a good experience for learners accessing your LO’s. Embedding video from a streaming service will also mean that the size of your Xerte project will be tiny in comparison.

Thanks Ron, I know about the YouTube embedded option, I was trying to avoid it as videos shared from YouTube would either have to be unlisted or Public, and it both cases this makes them accessible on YouTube i.e. outside the learning object.

I just referred to YouTube as a typical option but there are lots of different streaming services to choose from and depends on your budget. A Vimeo pro account will give you the restricted access you require. That’s what I use. But search around and choose the service that suits your needs best. What I can say is that we have more integrated use of YouTube and Vimeo in Xerte than less common services and by that I mean being able to use URL’s from those services in Media Lesson etc.

I can see from your profile that you are an online English Teacher.

Do you belong to an institution/school/college/university/academy etc? If so, it may be worth finding out if they have a streaming server or some form of lecture recording facility (some options are Panopto, eStream, Helix, but there are several others too)?

If you do have something that allows you to record your lectures/sessions then that may well have an option to upload existing videos. If you do this, you can then take the embed code that your server will generate and use the navigation > embed code page template.

Hope that helps

Helen
