I was wondering if there was any way to update the existing hotspot page types or add a new page type that handles text a little better. I've included a short learning object with a couple of examples of what I mean:

Link: xerte.cardiff.ac.uk/play_4589

1. Page 1 shows the standard hotspot page type with an example of how users have tried to create clickable text. Basically, it's a screenshot of a paragraph of text. The problem is the image becomes unreadable at certain screen sizes.

2. Page 2 shows a recent workaround. Basically, recreating the page but with actual clickable text. It seems to work, but the HTML gets a bit verbose.

3. Page 3 shows another example of the workaround.

4. Page 4 shows an extension of this workaround to offer a new page type. Again, the code here is very verbose and not straightforward for many users to set up.

Would it be possible to add these or similar page types to the defaults?

Hi Neil
you're unlikely to get too many responses here now until after the festive holidays.
Some nice ideas here though and the challenge as always with this kind of thing is to keep it simple enough for anyone to use e.g. if there's an easy way to build what's required into the wizard for a page so that the authoring view is easy to complete then yes potentially it should be possible to replicate some of this. We're looking to schedule some developer days in 2017 (probably March) where we hope to get together and plan, prioritise and in some case develop new features and functionality perhaps you'd be interested in joining us?

In the meantime one way of improving the current hotspot functionality when the image is just text is to save the text as an svg rather than jpg or png using something like Inkscape. Indeed Inkscape can often be better for some of the images authors often want to add to their projects and is simple enough to use or even to save from PowerPoint as wmf/emf and then convert using Inkscape.

We'll pick this up again in the new year so in the meantime have a great Xmas!

Hi Neil

Have you tried the interactive text page? This page allows you to mark up text for a variety of activities. Here's a quick example where each paragraph is clickable and brings up more info www.nottingham.ac.uk/toolkits/play_15960

You might find that this is more suitable for what you're trying to achieve than the image hotspot page. The page is also quite flexible in that you can change the interactivity type used - so you can use your marked up text to create a 'find' activity (e.g. find all the adjectives/nouns/verbs in a sentence) or to generate multiple choice questions (e.g. click on the sentence that uses the present tense)

Hope this helps
Fay

Thanks. I think that is just what users want.

What version of Xerte is this? I don't appear to have access to this page type...

It was done early last year so would have been part of April's v3.2 release.
